Stroll down Weston Walk
For a gentle stroll, set out on 'Weston Walk', our specially created route that leads directly from the huts into the heart of Skendleby.
A History Stretching Back Centuries
Skendleby was mentioned in the 1086 Domesday Book as having a church and 36 households, with Gilbert de Gant listed as Lord of the Manor. By the reign of Elizabeth I, the number of households had decreased to 27. The 2021 census records a population of just 160, reflecting the village’s continued small, close-knit community.
The parish church of St Peter and St Paul dates from the 13th century and was lovingly restored in 1876. It features a large stained glass west window, one of only two Ascension windows in the deanery, admired by many visitors. A long fundraising campaign saw the church roof completely renewed in 2012, ensuring it remains at the heart of the village.
Nearby, Skendleby Priory, a 12th-century cell of Bardney Abbey, reveals the village’s early religious heritage. Giants Hill, a Neolithic burial site just outside the village, shows that settlement here stretches back thousands of years.
Notable Landmarks
Skendleby Hall, a Grade II listed Georgian manor house, was built 250 years ago and later expanded in the Victorian period. Once a grand family home and used by RAF officers during WWII, today it is licensed for weddings and offers luxury self-catering for large groups, celebrations, and corporate events.
The Blacksmiths Arms village pub in the centre of Skendleby serves good quality meals and traditional Sunday lunches. Within easy reach of the church, it provides a warm welcome and a taste of Lincolnshire hospitality.
